Quick Tips to Try When Your Sound System Fails to Work

Simple Car Audio Troubleshooting Tips

Some car radios fail to work properly due to issues with the power sources or with parts where current is passed through. Wiring is the biggest issue that may result in a car radio to fail. The radio must be connected to a power source and speakers using a series of wires that are usually located beneath the dashboard. When it comes to car audio troubleshooting, you first need to check the wiring.

Also, car radios do use fuses to stop any damage being done due to power upsurges. When a fuse is blown, the car’s audio circuit will be broken and the radio will not work. The other cause may be power or ground connector problems.

Symptoms to look for include:

  1. Radio does not switch on – wiring issues or a blown fuse
  2. Radio turns off at irregular intervals – power or ground connection issues.
  3. Car radio display and sound switches itself off and on – head unit may not be receiving sufficient power
  4. Radio goes off when turning or going over a bump – a connector to the rear of the unit is loose

What to do when your car radio does not work

First, check if a fuse has blown with the aid of a multimeter. Make sure the system’s power is off, then touch the metal caps of each fuse and see if a reading is recorded. When the multimeter shows a reading, then your fuse has not blown; when there is no reading then this is a sure indication you have a blown fuse. Also, you need to check for any wiring issues with the ground connections. When the ground connection is loose or has rusted out, it will need to be repaired in order for the radio to work.
